The amberola is a type of hand-cranked phonograph introduced by Thomas Edison, with the first model (Amberola I) debuting in 1909. It featured an internal rather than external horn and used phonograph cylinders that could play four minutes of music. The amberola was developed to compete with the Victor Talking Machine Company, which had gained market advantage with disc records and internal-horn aesthetics.

The amberola was invented by Thomas Edison as a direct response to the Victor Talking Machine Company (VTMC), which had surpassed Edison's earlier phonograph designs. The VTMC had popularized disc records and an internal horn design that the public preferred, though Edison's cylinders offered comparable sound quality. The amberola used phonograph cylinders that were mass-producible, but Edison had already introduced mass-produced wax cylinders (Gold Moulded records) in 1902, well before the amberola. The Blue Amberol cylinders allowed musicians to record once and produce a large volume of identical sellable recordings, expanding Edison's catalogue.
In 1912, Edison established Blue Amberol Records (BAR) as the trademark name for the cylinders played on the amberola. By 1915, disc records from Victor and Columbia had overtaken cylinders in popularity, and the amberola never achieved market dominance.
